The Flight of events

Overview

The Flight of Events, the second book of a Psychopathology of Melancholia Series, after Manie, mélancolie et facteurs blancs (Beauchesne, Paris, 2009), is a work on altruistic anguishes in manic-depressive suicides.

In this book, German Arce Ross has chosen to focus on the psychological processes that occur prior to the act of suicide, rather than on the act itself. We can detect these processes in a subject during the period between the decision to commit suicide and the passage to the act.

In the consideration of certain moments preceding a suicidal or criminal act, in the case of critical episodes that are non-delusional, non-hallucinated and non-acted but sometimes assimilated to psychotic or twilight moments — where we locate in particular a discontinuity or a radical rupture, albeit momentary, with the Other —, we can observe that there are things, facts, or events, that happen to the subject without any form of control over them whatsoever.

In these uncontrolled intersubjective events, what the subject suffers from is a tendency to undergo the acts that he himself makes others perform. During this flight of events, it is not entirely true that the subject flees the events of his life; it is rather the events that flee.

About the author

PhD in Psychology (1999), PhD of Psychoanalysis (1989), German Arce Ross is psychoanalyst and clinical psychologist. A former member of the École de la Cause Freudienne and of the World Association of Psychoanalysis from 1997 to 2021, member of the Évolution Psychiatrique since 2001 and of the Société Médico-Psychologique since 2016, he practices in Paris since 1989.

German Arce Ross is also a former teacher at the Psychoanalysis Department – University Paris VIII, at the Laboratory of Clinical Psychology – University Rennes II, and at the Psychological Sciences Department – University Paris X.

He has written a considerable amount of articles in French, Belgian, Italian, Russian and Brazilian journals. He has also written books such as Manie, mélancolie et facteurs blancs in 2009, La Fuite des événements in 2016, and Jouissance identitaire dans la civilisation in 2020.

Deuxième ouvrage de la Série Psychopathologie de la mélancolie, après le livre Manie, mélancolie et facteurs blancs (Beauchesne, Paris, 2009), La Fuite des événements est le fruit d’une recherche sur les angoisses altruistes dans les suicides maniaco-dépressifs.

Dans cet ouvrage, German Arce Ross a choisi de s’intéresser aux processus psychiques qui précèdent l’acte suicidaire, plutôt qu’à l’acte lui-même. Nous pouvons détecter ces processus chez un sujet pendant la période qui s’écoule entre la décision de se suicider et le passage à l’acte.

Dans la prise en compte de certains moments précédant un acte suicidaire ou criminel, dans le cas d’épisodes critiques non délirants, non hallucinés et non agis mais parfois assimilés à des moments psychotiques ou crépusculaires — où l’on situe notamment une discontinuité ou une rupture radicale, bien que momentanée, avec l’Autre —, on peut observer qu’il y a des choses, des faits, ou des événements, qui arrivent au sujet sans aucune forme de contrôle sur eux.

Dans ces événements intersubjectifs incontrôlés, le sujet souffre d’une tendance à subir les actes qu’il fait lui-même accomplir aux autres. Dans cette fuite des événements, il n’est pas tout à fait vrai que le sujet fuit les événements de sa vie. Ce sont plutôt les événements eux-mêmes qui fuient.

Segundo libro de la serie Psicopatología de la melancolía, continuación del primer trabajo sobre Manía, melancolía y factores blancos (Beauchesne, París, 2009), La Fuga de eventos es el resultado de una investigación sobre las ansiedades altruistas en los suicidios maníaco-depresivos.

En este libro, German Arce Ross ha optado por centrarse en los procesos psicológicos que preceden al acto suicida, más que en el acto en sí. Podemos detectar estos procesos en un sujeto durante el periodo que transcurre entre la decisión de suicidarse y el acto en sí.

Teniendo en cuenta ciertos momentos que preceden a un acto suicida o criminal, en el caso de episodios críticos que no son delirantes, ni alucinados, ni actuados, sino que a veces se asimilan a momentos psicóticos o crepusculares — en los que se produce en particular una discontinuidad o ruptura radical, aunque momentánea, con el Otro —, podemos observar que hay cosas, hechos o eventos que le suceden al sujeto sin tener ninguna forma de control sobre ellos.

En estos eventos intersubjetivos incontrolados, el sujeto sufre una tendencia a sufrir los actos que él mismo hace que otros ejecuten. En esta fuga de eventos, no se trata exacatamente que el sujeto huya de los eventos de su vida, sino que son los propios eventos de vida los que fugan.
